ABS-CBN wins Corporate Governance Award

For the second straight year, ABS-CBN Corporation was honored by the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) as one of the top-performing companies of 2009 in terms of corporate governance and compliance practices.

ABS-CBN, which is the only multimedia company to win the recognition for two consecutive years, is among the 30 companies that scored highly and at par with international standards.

The annual event aims to promote transparency, accountability and the general practice of good corporate governance in all publicly-listed companies in the Philippines.

The ICD conducted the Corporate Governance Scorecard with the help of the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Philippine Stock Exchange, and the Ateneo School of Law.

ABS-CBN has recently changed its name from ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation to ABS-CBN Corporation to reflect the company's evolution from a broadcasting network to a multimedia conglomerate.

"We want the public to recall ABS-CBN as not just broadcast-centric company. Through the years, we have been exploring various media platforms aside from broadcasting," said Eugenio Lopez III, chairman and CEO of ABS-CBN.

Willie leaves ‘Wowowee’ but will honor ABS-CBN contract

It’s official. Willie Revillame is taking an indefinite leave from his noontime show “Wowowee” but will still honor his obligations to his talent contract with ABS-CBN after lengthy talks Monday night over the TV host’s intention for his release from the network.

Both sides hammered out a legal resolution to his sudden action that would apparently benefit the host and the network.

This means Revillame could not appear in a rival program or sign a talent contract with any rival program or network throughout the remainder of his contract, which runs until 2011.

“ABS-CBN and Willie agreed that he takes an indefinite break effective immediately, but his contract obligations with ABS-CBN hold. This disallows him to perform similar work for any person or entity in direct competition with ABS-CBN,” Bong Osorio, ABS-CBN Corporate Communications Head said in a statement.

“Willie has realized his mistake and apologized to ABS-CBN management for his outburst on air in Wowowee on May 4, 2010, and his failure to report to work since May 5, 2010. ABS-CBN management has accepted Willie’s apology,” he added

“At some point, ABS-CBN management and Willie will discuss what will be in the best interest of the viewing public. Meanwhile, Wowowee will continue to provide entertainment and inspiration to Filipinos worldwide,” Osorio concluded.

Revillame had asked for his release after airing his grips over fellow network talent Jobert Sucaldito’s remarks against the show, particularly an utterance over the radio show “Showbiz Mismo” castigating the use of school flunkers in a game portion.

The controversial host lashed out at Sucaldito in a May 4 episode of Wowowee and dared the network to fire the tabloid columnist and segment host of “The Buzz,” or else he would leave the show. He appealed to the network to stop contract artists from attacking each other, as all of them toil through immense hardship just earn a living and contribute to the network’s earnings.

A week after his televised outburst, Revillame sought his release from his ABS-CBN contract through a letter addressed to the network’s top executives due to his exasperation over the continuing controversies hounding him, health problems, and his desire to prevent further “embarrassment” to the network

“My devotion to the show is unparalleled that I have even been besieged by health problems due to the long hours I spend daily, thinking of how to bring “Wowowee” closer to the public. In fact, I have developed a heart blockage, which has already once posed a real threat to my life. I have sacrificed so much. Now, I have to accept the reality that I also have to take good care of my health,” Willie said in the letter.

He added: “Hence, it is very painful to hear every time my show is the target of unwanted and unnecessary tirades. I do not think that these people even have the slightest clue of what I go through to put together a show like “Wowowee”’. The show is not for me, but for those people who dream of a better life. Is it too much to ask that we be respected for what we do? Is it too much to ask that we be defended from such attacks?

“My outburst last week during the live presentation of the show is nothing more than a reflection of my frustration over these things, and was not at all meant to disrespect the network and its management. I implore you to understand that several incidents, which were beyond my control which have marred the reputation of the show to some extent, have already taken their toll on me,” Willie noted.

He further explained: “There was the “Wilyonaryo” incident wherein we were accused of deceiving contestants about their winnings; the Ultra stampede wherein I was blamed and severely criticized; the misunderstanding about my remarks when the coverage of the funeral of the late Pres. Corazon Aquino was unexpectedly shown in the giling-giling portion of “Wowowee”’s airing, for which I have apologized. In all these incidents, I took responsibility even if I was not at fault.”

“I know that all these have caused so much strain on our relations and I would like to save the situation by asking that I be released as a talent of the station,” he said.

Cesar Montano confirms he's hosting 'Wowowee'

Award-winning actor Cesar Montano on Tuesday disclosed that he will host noontime show "Wowowee."

In an exclusive interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com, Montano admitted that he accepted an offer from ABS-CBN management to host the popular show for 2 weeks.

"Ang ino-offer lang nila sa akin is just 2 weeks to host. That's the only thing I heard. But I think I have to hear pa 'yong development kung kailan ako papalit or what," Montano said.

Rumor has it that Montano is being eyed by ABS-CBN to permanently replace Willie Revillame, who is on “indefinite break” from “Wowowee.” Montano, however, said it's too early to discuss it.

"I cannot confirm. It's so premature. I cannot give certain details regarding that. Until now, wala pa akong natatanggap," Montano stressed.

He added: "Although it's not a bad idea, its a good honor for me. Pero I think regarding the show or any TV show, wala pa pong nakukumpirma. Even 'Singing Bee,' kung kailan ito babalik hindi ko pa alam."

Montano hosted hit musical game show "Singing Bee," which aired its last episode February of this year after he decided to join the gubernatorial race in Bohol. Montano lost in that race.

Montano said he is open to replacing Revillame as a permanent host of "Wowowee," saying it will be a new challenge for him.

"I'm open to this idea... It's another challenge to fulfill. Siguro kapag nakita ko na kung gaano kaganda ang offer at avenue," Montano said.

Action star Robin Padilla is also hosting “Wowowee” for 2 weeks. His last day on the show is on Friday. -Report by Reyma Buan-Deveza, abs-cbnNEWS.com

Willie Revillame's Resignation Letter

Dear Sir Gabby and Ma'am Charo,

I have labored over the past week on what to do in the face of another setback in my relations with the management of the network. ABS-CBN has been my home for the last five years and five months and it has given me the greatest gift—the opportunity to reach out to people who have so little in life.

In the process, I have come to realize that my gratitude to the network would be more meaningful if I considered the impact of my recent actions which has placed the station in a bad light. This is among the reasons, as I will explain in this letter, that I humbly request the management, to release me as a talent of the network.

It is no secret that the program "Wowowee," for almost five and a half years, has been the core of my existence. The program gives me a sense of purpose because I make people happy and I give them hope that, despite their difficulties, they can make things happen for themselves. Because of this, my world has revolved around the show. The desire to make it the best noontime show, has consumed my waking hours, as I conceptualize its format and contents from Monday to Saturday. Apart from this, I want the show to give the network excellent ratings to maintain its reputation as the leader in the broadcasting industry.

My devotion to the show is unparalleled that I have even been besieged by health problems due to the long hours I spend daily, thinking of how to bring "Wowowee" closer to the public. In fact, I have developed a heart blockage, which has already once posed a real threat to my life. I have sacrificed so much. Now, I have to accept the reality that I also have to take good care of my health.

Hence, it is very painful to hear every time my show is the target of unwanted and unnecessary tirades. I do not think that these people even have the slightest clue of what I go through to put together a show like "Wowowee"'. The show is not for me, but for those people who dream of a better life. Is it too much to ask that we be respected for what we do? Is it too much to ask that we be defended from such attacks?

My outburst last week during the live presentation of the show is nothing more than a reflection of my frustration over these things, and was not at all meant to disrespect the network and its management. I implore you to understand that several incidents, which were beyond my control which have marred the reputation of the show to some extent, have already taken their toll on me.

There was the "Wilyonaryo" incident wherein we were accused of deceiving contestants about their winnings; the Ultra stampede wherein I was blamed and severely criticized; the misunderstanding about my remarks when the coverage of the funeral of the late Pres. Corazon Aquino was unexpectedly shown in the giling-giling portion of "Wowowee"'s airing, for which I have apologized. In all these incidents, I took responsibility even if I was not at fault.

I do not want to cause any further embarrassment to the network. I know that all these have caused so much strain on our relations and I would like to save the situation by asking that I be released as a talent of the station. This way, I will have the much-needed space and time to contemplate on my direction in life and, at the same time, maintain the relationships I have built within the network, which are all worth preserving.

Before I end this letter, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to all the important people I have had the good fortune to work with during the years I have been with ABS-CBN.

There will never be enough words to express my gratitude to all of you...

Salamat at mabuhay po kayong lahat!

Respectfully yours,
Willie B. Revillame

Paul Jake Castillo and gf Denise breakup

Paul Jake Castillo has confirmed to SNN via a pre-recorded phone patch interview last night that he and longtime girlfriend Denise Jalandoni have broken up.

He did not disclose the cause of the break-up, which happened 2 to 3 weeks ago. At 'di naman kaya si Sam Pinto ang dahilan?

One month ago, Paul Jake and Sam were seen together partying in Cebu, which I first reported here before, and they were allegedly so sweet with each other. And a week after, Paul Jake broke up with his girlfriend.

Paul Jake however denied that Sam Pinto was the reason of the breakup and stressed that they're just close friends.

Whatever the reason is, it must have been so serious for them to let go of a precious relationship.

It can be recalled that Denise was very visible and supportive all throughout Paul Jake's stay inside PBB. Paul Jake even used his special 100-second encounter in PBB with Denise and not with any member from his family.

With Robin Padilla, Wowowee's ratings go up

Robin Padilla is happy that popular noontime show “Wowowee” continues to do well in terms of television ratings after he took over the show 5 days ago.

“Lahat po ng ginagawa ko dito para po sa inyo… medyo bago po sa atin ang [pagho-host] pero lahat ng ito [ay ginagawa natin para] tayo’y maging masaya,” Padilla said.

Padilla’s hosting stint on “Wowowee" ranked No. 5 on Twitter’s worldwide top trending topics when he was formally introduced as Revillame’s temporary replacement on May 15.

Based on the television ratings data released by global research specialist Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS), “Wowowee’s” audience share jumped from 18.1% on May 14 to 20.5% on May 15. The show’s audience share on May 17 was at 20.5%.

“Wowowee” also continued to beat its rival, “Eat Bulaga,” according to the TNS national data. "Eat Bulaga's" audience share on May 14 was 12.2%; May 15, 13.6% ; and May 17, 11.4%, figures from TNS showed.

Padilla said he is happy to host the show while Revillame remains on indefinite leave. He also vowed to improve his hosting skill.

“Pasensya na po. Marami pa rin po akong pagkakamali. Kapag pinapanood kong mag-isa ang episode, nakikita ko po ang lahat ng pagkakamali ko,” he said.

“Hayaan ninyo po. Pinipilit ko po araw-araw na malagpasan pa kung ano ang nagawa ko noong nakaraang araw. Alam ninyo naman na ako ay [a] man of few words. Akalain mo, ngayon dapat ay maging madaldal [ako]. Iyan ay mahirap,” he added.

The action star also refused to be discouraged by criticisms thrown at him since he replaced Revillame.

He said: “Opinion ng tao 'yan na dapat i-respeto at hindi kontrahin. Dapat nating ligawan. Bilang nagpupumilit na host ng ‘Wowowee,’ dapat nating ligawan ang tao.”

Good friends

Padilla has captured the hearts not only the avid viewers of the show but also of his co-hosts Pokwang, Mariel Rodriguez, Valerie Concepcion, Carmen Soo, Kelly Misa, Isabelle Abiera and Jed Montero.

In particular, Padilla and Pokwang have become good friends. The guest host of “Wowowee” even surprised the comedienne during a guesting on KC Concepcion's new show, "Simple at Totoo."

Padilla said Pokwang is dear to him, which is why he wants to support her the way she supports him when he's hosting "Wowowee."

“Siyempre ‘yong pinapakitang suporta ni Pokwang, Mariel at iba pang ‘Wowowee’ host, kailangan ko ding suklian ng suporta,” he said. -Reports from SNN: Showbiz News Ngayon and ANC

Robin to replace Willie permanently?

IT seems “Wowowee” fans are charmed by Robin Padilla who hosted recent editions of the show.

The gentleman in Robin proved to be a refreshing change from the perceived arrogance of the former host. He is charming, kind and more sympathetic to the show’s contestants.

Given the results of the on-going ABS CBN poll getting the opinions of fans regarding the way the former “Wowowee“ host challenged ABS-CBN management, would Robin permanently replace Willie Revillame? Just asking…

Sen. Villar's defeat, Willie's downfall?

After Sen. Manny Villar conceded to Sen. Noynoy Aquino, speculations arise as to what the future would bring regarding Willie Revillame’s career in show business.

The fact that Willie failed to rally the public to vote for his favored candidate not only made a huge dent on his credibility as an endorser but may also be considered a sign of disenchantment in view of his recent negative behavior.

Are we seeing the start of Willie’s downfall? Just asking…

ABS-CBN among most searched during election week

The country's first nationwide automated elections created a major stir last week, with most Internet-using Filipinos searching for ABS-CBN for the latest news and updates.

Data from Google Philippines' Zeitgeist list showed that ABS-CBN is the only network that made it to the top 10 fastest rising search terms from May 8 to May 14.

At least 7 of the top 10 fastest rising search topics in the county were related to the May 10 polls, with ABS-CBN placing 9th on the list.

The multimedia conglomerate used new broadcast technology and an army of citizen journalists for its coverage of the 2010 polls. Last March, a Pulse Asia poll showed ABS-CBN's election coverage credibility rating at 63%, higher than GMA Network's 55% and TV5's 29%.

"Hailed as fair and balanced coverage, the network's election news, interactive platforms, and real-time reporting were highly watched both on TV and online," said Vanessa Orendain, managing editorial director of TeamAsia.

The Armed Forces placed third on the list following the implementation of a nationwide gun ban in the runup to the elections.

Aside from the election results, online Filipinos also searched for more information on the Commission on Elections and Smartmatic, which is the accredited supplier for the precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machines used in the election. Pinoys also sought information about Zamboanga City, particularly the election-related deaths of 11 people last May 10.

Despite the election fever, the 2010 NBA playoffs was Google Philippines' most searched term last week. This as the Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic entered the conference finals and the Boston Celtics had a stunning win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Other top search topics last week include American Idol and Bangkok.

Below is the full list of the fastest rising search topics from May 8 to May 14:

1. NBA
2. American Idol
3. Armed Forces
4. Bangkok
5. Philippine election
6. Election results Philippines
7. Comelec
8. Smartmatic
9. ABS-CBN
10. Zamboanga City

Newsmakers

Not surprisingly, most of the top newsmakers last week were candidates in the May 10 polls.

Topping the list is Liberal Party standard-bearer Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, who is currently leading in the presidential race. His running mate, Manuel "Mar" Roxas II, is also one of the most-searched personalities in Google Philippines as he trails Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay by a small margin.

Seven-division world boxing champ Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao also caught the interest of Internet-using Filipinos last week after winning a congressional seat in Sarangani province.

Other presidential and vice-presidential candidates made it to the list: Binay, former President Joseph "Erap" Estrada, Lakas-Kampi-CMD standard-bearer Gilbert "Gibo" Teodoro, Bangon Pilipinas standard-bearer Bro. Eddie Villanueva and Nacionalista Party standard-bearer Manuel "Manny" Villar.

Below is the full list of Google Philippines' fastest rising newsmakers from May 8 to 14:

1. Aquino III
2. Pacquiao
3. Mar Roxas
4. Binay
5. Joseph Estrada
6. Willie Revillame
7. Mayweather
8. Gibo Teodoro
9. Manny Villar
10. Eddie Villanueva

Wil to host “The Price is Right!”

Wil Revillame is keeping his word: He’s no longer appearing in “Wowowee” if Jobert Sucaldito is not removed from ABS-CBN. His actions 11 days after making the statement confirm this. Here’s the big confirmation!

Wil is set to host the local version “The Price is Right” for a an entertainment-based network where a business conglomorate is now part owner. Since Wil is under contract with ABS-CBN until 2011, he plans to do it as a host of “The Price Is Right” and as a blocktimer. He plans to do other show formats in a different setup eventually once he is free of his contractual obligation with ABS-CBN.

STIR knows the other details of the new show and the network but will not disclose them at this time.

I wrote in last Monday’s STIR entitled “What makes Wil blow his top?” (CLICK HERE for details): “But I don’t know why it keep on popping in my grey matters that Wil has the alternative to produce his own noontime show under this scenario: With himself, Manny Pacquiao, and Manny Villar as investors, he will convert the Wil Theater-Mall (expected time of completion – 2012) into his own studio and air the show as a blocktimer. If he puts his mind into it, he can also easily put up his own network.”

This FIRST CRACK is a confirmation of said hunch but the Wil Theater-Mall conversion is out of scenario as “The First Is Right” is an A.S.A.P. project. New big players have entered the scene.

As reported by STIR, “Party On 5” featured Wil’s songs yesterday and Cristy Fermin interviewed him for “Paparazzi.” Although feelers have been sent, TV5 head Bobby Barreiro confirmed the Kapatid network had not formally talked with Willie or there’s a standing offer for his transfer.

Wil is in Macau with Luis Chavit Singson and Edgar Mortiz. If you’ve been to Macau, you know they are not there for sightseeing. For sure, they are there to play the “future” table!

But the big stumbing block is still Wil’s contract with ABS-CBN.

Pag-uusap ng ABS-CBN at ni Willie Revillame, Hindi Natuloy!

The scheduled “closed-door, heart-to-heart” (as Funfare put it) meeting between Wowowee host Willie Revillame and ABS-CBN big boss Gabby Lopez wasn’t pushed through yesterday. Instead, Willie flew to Macau with some “confidantes/advisers” perhaps not just to take a much-deserved breather but to take stock of the situation — you know, will Willie go back to Wowowee or is he gone for good?

What if, just if, Jobert Sucaldito changes his mind and apologize to Willie for, as Willie fumed, hitting him “for one year now” on his (Jobert’s) dzMM program? Willie bowed on air that he would quit Wowowee if management wouldn’t fire Jobert.

“Knowing Willie,” said a Funfare DPA, “he’s firm on his decision. If you ask me, I don’t think he’ll ever go back to Wowowee. He’s tired; he has become sickly because of the daily grind. What’s the use nga naman of making millions if it’s his health that will suffer? My guess is that he will rest for six months and spring a surprise when he comes back.”

Yes, Funfare stands on its report that Willie has prepared a letter addressed to the ABS-CBN management, maybe not a resignation letter but one asking for the termination of his contract which is still good for one year and a half.

Like Wowowee fans, I wish that Willie and Jobert, with the intervention of ABS-CBN management, will iron out their differences and, as the adage goes, let the show go on.

Okay, cash o bukas?

Don’t change channels. Watch for more developments.

ABS-CBN NEWS : Pinagkakatiwalaan ng MAS MARAMING Filipino

Based on CMFR's monitoring of the news coverage of private stations ABS-CBN, GMA-7, and government-station NBN-4 from March 1 to 12, NBN-4 devoted more time to election-related stories at 34.2%.

ABS-CBN's coverage of election-related stories was at 31.8% while GMA-7's was at 19.7%.

The CMFR said 90% of ABS-CBN's election stories were neutral while GMA-7 had 64% neutral reports. For NBN-4, 41% of its reports were seen as neutral.

The CMFR said the reporting done by the major networks was generally responsible during the period.

CMFR’s findings are reflected in an April 2010 survey of Pulse Asia, which found 63% of respondents believe that ABS-CBN has been the most credible in covering the polls, followed by GMA-7 at 55%, and NBN-4 at 27%.

A recent survey by Manila Standard Today also showed a similar result: 60-63% of television viewers said they trust ABS-CBN News programs, while 35-38% found GMA-7’s programs trustworthy.

Ipinalabas na ang Nationwide TV Ratings for Election Day ng TNS Philippines, at nangunguna rito ang election coverage ng ABS-CBN laban sa election coverage ng GMA-7.

But in the end, ABS-CBN emerged the most-watched network during the most important event of the Philippines. And take note, hindi lang pang-Mega Manila yan, kundi pang-nationwide. Iba talaga ang pinagkakatiwalaan no?

NOW THAT'S A SOURCE, NOT AN OPINION, AND MORE THAN THREE SOURCES PA.
1. TNS Phils.
2. Center for Media Freedom Responsibility
3. Pulse Asia

Political ads boost ABS-CBN Q1 earnings

Earnings of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp., the country's largest multimedia conglomerate, grew nearly six-fold to P1.09 billion in the first quarter of 2010, boosted mainly by higher airtime revenues during the election campaign period.

Political advertising revenues of P1.04 billion, together with the P4.02 billion generated from regular advertisers, brought ABS-CBN's total ad revenues to P5.06 billion, a year-on-year growth of 83%.

Advertising revenues accounted for 65% of consolidated revenues, which rose 47% to P7.75 billion.

Consumer sales, which contributed the remaining 35% of total revenues, reached P2.69 billion, representing a relatively slower growth of 7%.

Excluding election-related income, ABS-CBN's profits still surged by 249% to P667 million from P191 million in the first quarter of 2009.

EBITDA for the January to March period of 2010 totaled P2.44 billion, 80% higher year-on-year, and yielding an EBITDA margin of 31%.

ABS-CBN said its total expenses grew by 22% to P5.44 billion, driven mostly by higher production cost and general and administrative expenses.

The conglomerate spent P486 million for capital expenditures in the first 3 months, 24% lower than the P153 million it shelled out a year ago.

Lopez-owned ABS-CBN is the Philippines' largest media firm with interests in radio, free-to-air and cable television, movie production and publishing. It is a unit of Benpres Holdings Corp.

ABS-CBN Leads Historic Halalan 2010 Election Coverage

ABS-CBN is the most credible TV network in giving election coverage according to Pulse Asia survey.

Creating an army of citizen journalists, breaking on-the-edge news reports, and courageously setting the news agenda best define ABS-CBN’s year-long election coverage that goes high-gear on Monday (May 10) with technological innovations that will change the way elections are covered in the country.

ABS-CBN will be using what is probably the biggest touch screen television ever used on Philippine TV news and a new broadcast technology called “augmented reality,” which combines computer-generated imagery with live video in real time, to report on the country’s first computerized polls that will determine the next leaders of the nation.

Using the touch screen TV, ABS-CBN anchors can easily pull up information on the candidates and comments from social media networks while a report progresses. Augmented reality, meanwhile, places an anchor in a virtual environment where he or she can interact with computer graphics that show the latest updates on the elections.

Aside from pioneering the hi-tech coverage of the elections, ABS-CBN has also scored several firsts in the past 12 months since it launched the election advocacy “Boto Mo, i-Patrol Mo: Ako ang Simula.”

ABS-CBN was the first to create a movement of citizen journalists the first to organize debates that used new media to engage viewers via Twitter and Facebook, the first to measure audience instant reactions during debates via WARS, and the first to hold an election concert that gathered its thousands of citizen patrollers.

Apart from courageous and ground-breaking news stories, ABS-CBN has successfully blended old and new media in engaging audiences, get instant feedbacks, and solicit questions for candidates guesting in their various news and talk programs.

ABS-CBN has more than 81,000 active boto patrollers, 67,720 fans on Facebook and some 11,861 followers on Twitter as of 6 May 2010, all who are ready to share information on the elections from their vicinities.

When it comes to election coverage, more Filipinos (63%) believe ABS-CBN is the most credible TV network in covering the election campaign as shown in a Pulse Asia nationwide survey conducted between 21-25 February 2010. The figure is way higher than compeition’s 55%.

More people switch to ABS-CBN’s flagship news program “TV Patrol World” when it comes to news. TVP even climbed to 2nd spot following Agua Bendita last week among all TV programs, according to TNS national ratings. “TV Patrol World” not only won nationally, but it aslo ruled in Mega Manila with a rating of 25.8% vs. competition’s 20.6% last Thursday.

ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs head Maria Ressa said hundreds of reporters in all ABS-CBN media platforms (television, radio, cable TV, online) will be deployed in different areas in the country to give situationers and updates.

They lead ABS-CBN’s army of change composed of professional and citizen journalists, while celebrities like Donita Rose, Phoem Barranda, and Janus Del Prado, rock stars Ney Dimaculangan of 6cyclemind and Kean Cipriano of CallaLily will join as celebrity patrollers.

Working hand-in-hand with ABS-CBN for this monumental coverage are cause partners Globe Telecommunications, Bayan Communications, STI, The Philippine Star, Manila Bulletin, Business World, Pulse Asia, University of the Philippines School of Economics, YouthVote Philippines, Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting, the Commission on Elections, and the National Movement for Free Elections.

Google, Map Central, REACT, Kontra-Daya, and Life Haven have also joined the cause to boost the online coverage of ABS-CBN Halalan 2010.

Halalan 2010: Embracing Citizen Journalism & New Technology in Poll Coverage

Creating an army of citizen journalists, breaking on-the-edge news reports, and courageously setting the news agenda best define ABS-CBN’s year-long election coverage that goes high-gear on Monday (May 10) to report on the country’s first computerized polls that will determine the next leaders of the nation.

ABS-CBN will be using what is probably the biggest touch screen television ever used on Philippine TV news and a new broadcast technology called “augmented reality,” which combines computer-generated imagery with live video in real time.

Using the touch screen TV, ABS-CBN anchors can easily pull up information on the candidates while a report progresses. Augmented reality, meanwhile, places an anchor in a virtual environment where he or she can interact with computer graphics that show the latest updates on the elections.

These technological innovations are just the latest pioneering efforts initiated by ABS-CBN, which scored several firsts in the past twelve months since it launched “Boto Mo, i-Patrol Mo: Ako ang Simula.”

ABS-CBN was the first to create a movement of citizen journalists the first to organize debates that used new media to engage viewers via Twitter and Facebook, the first to measure audience instant reactions during debates via WARS, and the first to hold an election concert that gathered its thousands of citizen patrollers.

Apart from courageous and ground-breaking news stories, ABS-CBN has successfully blended old and new media in engaging audiences, getting instant feedbacks, and soliciting questions for candidates guesting in their various news and talk programs.

ABS-CBN has more than 81,000 active boto patrollers, 67,720 fans on Facebook and some 11,861 followers on Twitter as of 6 May 2010.

These groundbreaking projects and stories have made ABS-CBN as the most credible TV network in covering the election campaign as shown in a Pulse Asia survey conducted between 21-25 February 2010, beating competition 63% vs 55%.

ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs head Maria Ressa said that the edge of Halalan 2010 rests not only on the technology but also on the “army of change” composed of professional and citizen journalists patrolling the country.

Hundreds of reporters in all ABS-CBN media platforms (television, radio, cable TV, online) will be deployed in different areas in the country to give situationers and updates.

Even celebrities are also taking part in the coverage with Kapamilya stars like Donita Rose Phoem Barranda, and Janus Del Prado, rock stars Ney Dimaculangan of 6cyclemind and Kean Cipriano of CallaLily also volunteering to patrol for their votes.
