Maricar Reyes denies alleged rift with Angel Locsin

Maricar Reyes told reporters who visited her on the set of Imortal that there’s no rift between her and co-star Angel Locsin. “Of course not because it’s not true,” was Maricar’s brief answer. Maricar was at one time named as the cause of the breakup of Angel and Luis Manzano’s romance.

Maricar further revealed that she and Angel are having a great time together on the set of Imortal. She also praised the latter for her impressive acting talent. “Wala pa kaming formal scenes together ni Angel. Pero I’ve seen her sa mga eksena niya. Magaling siya. More of off camera ang interaction ko sa kanya so far. She’s such a jolly person, ma-chika siya. Pero kapag pumasok na siya sa character niya makikita mo ‘yung mabilis na shift.”

Being the two female lead stars in the upcoming ABS-CBN fantaserye, Maricar and Angel easily found common interests. “Mahilig kami sa damit, sa food. Mahilig siya sa fruits. Nakakatuwa siya kasi mga healthy food ang dinadala niya sa set.”

While Angel has been recognized for doing numerous fantaseryes in the past, Imortal marks Maricar’s first venture in the fantasy genre. But Maricar said she welcomes challenges in her career as an actress. “Physically draining siya. Pero at least, in a way hindi pa siya emotionally heart-wrenching sa ngayon. It’s a different challenge this time compared to my other roles before na emotionally draining.”

The model-turned-actress talked about the preparing for the fight scenes and stunts that she had to do in Imortal as she takes on the character of vampire Samantha. “May mga fight scenes na kami and nagte-training kami for that. May trainer kami for mixed martial arts. Naka-ilang sessions din kami before kami nag-start ng taping. Gumagamit din kami ng harness. Pero may mga trainer naman at stunt men na tumutulong sa amin kung ano ang dapat gawin, kung paano mag flip. Patient talaga sila magturo so I’m thankful.”

No one would have thought that after 18 years, one of the teleseryes which really had a mark on viewers’ lives will have a television comeback.

At the Bi-Da iDOL ABS-CBN Trade Launch on Wednesday, the network bared the return of “Mara Clara”. This is the show which paved the way for the success of today’s Queen of Teleserye, Judy Ann Santos.

However, ABS-CBN left its viewers anticipating on who will star in the remake of the unforgettable soap.

New shows

As the Kapamilya network celebrates its 60 years of Pinoy Soap Opera, it also announced its upcoming shows.

Angel Locsin and John Lloyd Cruz will star in their first TV project together, a fantasy series entitled “Imortal”.

Another offering of the Precious Hearts Romances will be starred in by Shaina Magdayao as “Alyna” who is facing a dilemma on which person to love.

There will also be another “Your Song Presents” series which will feature the love story of two people played by Christian Bautista and Carmen Soo.

ABS-CBN also announced the comeback of another teleserye, “Kokey @ Ako”, starring Toni Gonzaga and Vhong Navarro.

The highlight of the event was the launching of the musical teleserye entitled “iDOL”. This will be Popstar Princess Sarah Geronimo's third musical-drama series as she already starred in “Bituing Walang Ningning” and “Pangarap na Bituin” before.

Geronimo will be joined by Sam Milby and Coco Martin in the said series.

Revillame files case vs ABS-CBN

Comedian and television host Willie Revillame has brought his rift with former mother network ABS-CBN before the court, seeking “judicial confirmation” of his rescission of contract as host of the noontime show Wowowee.

The TV host last Friday filed the case for Judicial Confirmation of Rescission of Contract with Damages before the Quezon City Regional Trial Court.

Revillame asked for more than P11 million in damages and legal fees from the TV network. The complaint was raffled off yesterday to the Quezon City RTC Branch 84 under Judge Luisito Cortez.

The host said he had already ended his contract with the network “for valid reasons” but the latter has publicly disputed it, saying they were the aggrieved party.

“So the public may know the truth as to who really is the aggrieved party, who truly is at fault, who has been insincere, who acted with evident bad faith, and who broke promises, plaintiff desires to have this recission judicially confirmed,” the TV host said in the complaint.

Revillame entered a contract with ABS-CBN to host Wowowee in September 2008 valid for a period of three years. Last May 25, the TV station suspended the host for three months without pay after he publicly asked the network to sack talent and showbiz scribe Jobert Sucaldito for allegedly attacking him on the latter’s radio program.

Revillame claimed that on July 10, he met with Florida “Linggit” Tan, ABS-CBN’s head of entertainment production, in her residence where they agreed he would return to Wowowee on July 31.

However, during a meeting on July 20, Tan allegedly told him that the network had changed its mind and instead offered him a once-a-week program on prime time and a show on Studio 23.

The network purportedly wrote him a letter dated July 26 about this. He wrote back on Aug. 9, rescinding his contract with the TV station and held a press conference about it.

Revillame claimed that ABS-CBN breached the provisions of their contract when it suspended him without pay, cancelled Wowowee, and downgraded his program from three hours daily or 18 hours weekly to just one hour weekly, or 17 hours less.

Stressing that his contract stated a live telecast, he also claimed the network placed him on probation without assurance of reinstatement, and also downgraded his appearance from a live to a pre-recorded program, which constitutes censorship and prior restraint.

He stated that under this setup, he would be deprived of his earning from “in-show” product endorsements, which has become part of his compensation package.

Revillame’s counsel Leonard de Vera said that the suspension without pay and the placing of his client under probation are “valid grounds” for him to terminate the contract.

The TV host claimed that the network did a “deliberate sabotage” of his image through the airing of “destructive pieces” against him instead of promoting him as its talent.

Apart from confirming the termination of his contract, the host asked for P5 million in moral damages, P5 million in exemplary damages, attorneys’ fees of P1 million, as well as P500,000 for “other expenses and cost of litigation.”

In a statement, Revillame said he is willing to forgo his claim for damages if he and ABS-CBN can go their separate ways amenably.

“For five years-and-a-half buhay ko ang ibinigay ko dyan (I gave my life there). From nine o’clock in the morning hanggang gabi, ideas ko ibinigay ko sa kanila. Bakit ganyan ang trato nila sa akin (From nine in the morning till night, I gave them my ideas. Why did they treat me this way),” he said.

ABS-CBN revamps daytime programming as ratings sag

LOPEZ-LED broadcast giant ABS-CBN Corp. implemented sweeping changes in its daytime programming starting yesterday (Aug. 16), after its shows’ ratings fell under the onslaught of rival GMA Network, Inc.

The previous daytime ratings leader, ABS-CBN’s talent contest Showtime, saw its ratings drop as much as six percentage points after GMA Network began airing old Filipino movies in the same 10 a.m. time slot last month.

The ratings information comes from Kantar Media/Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS) Philippines provided by ABS-CBN.

On Monday, ABS-CBN mimicked GMA Network and started airing old Filipino movies in the 10 a.m. time slot. Showtime now airs Mondays to Fridays after the movies at 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

ABS-CBN’s new noontime show, Pilipinas Win na Win, has also received a beating from the long-running noontime program Eat Bulaga which airs on GMA Network at noon. Since its pilot telecast on July 31, Pilipinas Win na Win only managed to beat Eat Bulaga twice, leading by barely one percentage point.

Eat Bulaga saw its national ratings soar by as much as five percentage points, while Pilipinas Win na Win lost the loyalty of TV audiences who had watched ABS-CBN’s former noontime show Wowowee.

Wowowee, which was yanked off the air last month after TV host Willie Revillame had problems with ABS-CBN, used to lead the race among all noontime shows with national ratings reaching as much as 20%.

Because of the changes, Pilipinas Win na Win, which is hosted by Kris Aquino, now airs at 1:30 p.m. Its running time has also been slashed to just 90 minutes from the previous three hours.

Meanwhile, ABS-CBN began airing the Filipino-dubbed Korean drama series He’s Beautiful on Monday, taking over the 5:30 p.m. time slot vacated by the drama mini-series Midnight Phantom, which aired its final episode on Friday.

He’s Beautiful follows the story of a nun-to-be who must abandon her life in the convent to live the life of her identical twin brother who was chosen to be the new member of a popular boy band. -- Jeffrey O. Valisno

Kuya Kim stable after stroke

Kim Atienza is fast recovering after suffering a mild stroke on Aug. 11.

The TV host also known as Kuya Kim was rushed to the Philippine General Hospital around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday after complaining of “dizziness” on his way to co-host ABS-CBN’s “Showtime!” He was later transferred to the Makati Medical Center, where he is still confined in the intensive care unit.

According to his doctors, Atienza is 99.9% recovered but he still needs to undergo other medical tests to determine what caused the mild stroke. He is expected to stay in the hospital for seven more days.

Atienza shared the good news: “Better na. Speech is back, still have to stay in ICU for three to four days. Prayers have worked.”

Former Manila Mayor and Environment Secretary Lito Atienza, Kuya Kim’s father, blamed severe fatigue for his son’s condition.

“Nahilo siya, na-disorient. Ganoon ang epekto ng severe fatigue that leads to a mild stroke.”

Aside from “Showtime,” Kuya Kim does the weather report for “TV Patrol” and hosts the wildlife show, “Matanglawin.”

Fely, Atienza’s wife, shared that doctors have advised her husband to reduce his activities to avoid stress. He was also placed under a low-fat diet.

ABS-CBN’s core profit up 55%; network claims lead in sales

BROADCAST giant ABS-CBN Corp. reported recurring profits of P1.26 billion for the first half of the year, 55% or P445 million higher than the P813 million earned in the same period last year as a result of “continuing efforts to manage and control expenses.”

Including nonrecurring business, net profit for the first half reached a record P2.27 billion -- surpassing 2009 profits -- as a result of “strong growth in regular advertising revenues complemented by political ad spending,” Rolando P. Valdueza, ABS-CBN’s chief finance officer, told reporters in a briefing yesterday.

“We actually hope to achieve P3 billion in net income for this year.

That is achievable because of the expected 30% increase in airtime for the next quarters,” he said.

For the six-month period ending June 30, the listed television company recorded consolidated revenues of P16.84 billion from advertising and consumer sales, P5.16 billion or 44% higher than the P11.69 billion recorded in the first half last year.

“Consolidated advertising revenues across all platforms and subsidiaries reached P11.5 billion in the first six months of the year, P4.78 billion or 71% higher than the P6.72 billion in the same period in 2009,” the company said.

It added: “This total includes nonrecurring advertising revenues amounting to P2.33 billion, which are advertising revenues from political advocacies and political ads that cannot be replaced by revenues from regular advertisers during non-election periods.”

Total advertising minutes sold in the first six months of the year jumped by 42%. Election-related advertising accounted for 11% of total minutes sold. Advertising minutes sold to regular advertisers alone rose by 26%.

Citing data from AGB Nielsen Media Research, the network said there was a reversal of relative share in total minutes sold, claiming a 60% share against GMA Network, Inc.’s 40% in terms of combined total minutes sold by the two main TV channels beginning May.

“The network maintained its national audience share and ratings leadership with total-day audience share averaging 44% in the second quarter, keeping a comfortable lead of 12 to 13 percentage points over GMA-7, based on the Kantar Media/TNS National Philippines Television Audience Measurement service,” it added.

ABS-CBN also said it led in Metro Manila with a 38% audience share in June and in Mega-Manila with a 36% audience share. ABS-CBN also claimed the June lead in South Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao with around 60% audience share, “maintaining 35 to 50 percentage point-wide margins over GMA-7.”

Meanwhile, consumer sales, mainly from ABS-CBN’s international cable channels and unit SkyCable reached P5.34 billion in the first half, an increase of P376 million or 8% over the same period last year.

Total expenses in the first six months grew by P2.12 billion or 23% year on year to P11.32 billion, driven mostly by higher production costs and general and administrative expenses.

Shares in ABS-CBN rallied by more than 7% to P52.50 apiece.

Certified Hit Idol Drama ‘He’s Beautiful’ Premieres on ABS-CBN

When Korea’s number one boyband gets in trouble, a nun-in-waiting is their only answer. Can the nun pose as a K-Pop heartthrob and become the band’s newest lead singer?

...From the first and true home of Asianovelas that brought you the 2009 hit “Boys Over Flowers”, get ready to feel the Asianovela fever once more as ABS-CBN premieres the biggest and much awaited idol drama of the year “He’s Beautiful” this Monday (Aug 16).

“He’s Beautiful” features one of Korea’s most sought after star today, singer-actress-model Park Shin Hye, as well as the newest heartthrobs in town which includes multi-awarded young actor Jang Geun Suk, Korean band C.N. Blue’s vocalist Jung Yong Hwa; and FTIsland’s frontman Lee Hong Ki, who recently visited the Philippine for a promotional tour.

Follow the story of nun-to-be Go Mi Nyu (Shin Hye), who must abandon her life in the convent to live the life of her identical twin brother Go Mi Nam who was chosen to be the new member of popular boyband A.N.Jell. Growing up in an orphanage, both Mi Nam and Mi Nyu never get to meet their biological mother. Thus, the latter agreed to do the switch and use her new found fame as a key to reunite their family.

But things wouldn’t be that easy for Mi Nyu (now Mi Nam) because before she can reach her goal, she must first learn how to deal with her individually unique bandmates— the childish and loud Jeremy (Hong Ki), the reserved and romantic Shin Woo (Yong Hwa), and the arrogant and stubborn leader of the band Tae Kyung (Geun Suk).

As if keeping her identity a secret isn’t that much of a problem, Mi Nam must face an even bigger dilemma as all three of her bandmates start to fall in love with her.

Will the boys find out that he is actually a she? To whom will Mi Nam share a beautiful romance with?

Don’t miss the highly anticipated & certified idol drama premiere of “He’s Beautiful” this Monday (Aug 16) before “Momay” on ABS-CBN.

Andi Eigenmann intends to take a break after 'Agua Bendita'

Agua Bendita is expected to end in September and lead star Andi Eigenmann’s immediate plan after the show wraps up is to take a well-deserved break. “I’m going to have a vacation first for probably one to two months and that’s when we’re going to prepare the [next] show because I think it’s under construction pa yata.

Patapos na po ‘yung Agua Bendita, patapos na po ‘yung taping namin, heto po pinag-uusapan na po namin,” she said, though added that there are no specific details yet on her next TV project. “Nagkaroon na ng meeting pero there is no definite plan yet. But of course I’m going to take a break, I’m going to Hong Kong.” Andi said that will also be going to the US with her mom, actress Jaclyn Jose.

Asked if she feels exhausted after doing the teleserye that catapulted her to stardom, Andi immediately answered, “Ay grabe, napagod talaga ako. Pagod na pagod.” She explained that since she has to play the roles of twins, she really has a hard time switching into her two characters every so often. “Especially [that I’m] a newbie actress. Nahihirapan po talaga ako, doble pa dahil nga naga-adjust pa ako to everything dahil bago pa ako.”

But being a competitive person, Andi said that she was more than willing to take on the roles because she gets to put her acting to the test. “The roles given to me were really perfect. Na-test talaga ‘yung skill tsaka ‘yung kung gaano ako ka-competitive pagdating sa ganyan and kung gaano ako mag-strive to work hard to do what I must aim to do,” she said.

Andi is also slated to make three other movies, the upcoming comedy flick Mamarazzi with Eugene Domingo, Deither Ocampo, and John Lapus. She is also part of the next Shake, Rattle, and Roll installment and in the remake of the film Temptation Island.

ABS-CBN nearly triples profit to P2.27 billion In first 6 months

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation expects to easily hit its P3 billion profit target for the year after it reported that its net income for the first six months of 2010 nearly tripled.

In a press briefing Tuesday, the firm said net income surged 179 percent to P2.27 billion from P813 million in the same period last year due to strong growth in regular advertising revenues complemented by political ad spending.

The firm said consolidated revenues from advertising and consumer sales amounted to P16.84 billion, 44 percent higher than the P11.69 billion in the first half of 2009.

Consolidated advertising revenues across all platforms and subsidiaries reached P11.5 billion in the first six months of the year, 71 percent higher than the P6.72 billion in the same period in 2009.

This total includes non-recurring advertising revenues amounting to P2.33 billion, which are advertising revenues from political advocacies and political ads that cannot be replaced by revenues from regular advertisers during non-election periods.

Recurring advertising revenues, mostly from regular advertisers, grew by 36 percent to P9.17 billion due to both a strong increase in total advertising minutes sold and the rate adjustments that took effect in August last year and in February this year.

Total advertising minutes sold by Channel 2 in the first six months of the year jumped 42 percent, boosted by strong regular advertising minutes growth, complemented by election-related advertising that contributed 11 percent of total minutes sold.

Advertising minutes sold to regular advertisers in the first semester rose 26 percent, driven by strong national ratings and high audience shares.

In a reversal of relative share in total minutes sold, Channel 2 enjoyed a 60 percent share against GMA7’s 40 percent share of the combined total minutes sold by the two channels beginning in May.

Consumer sales for the first semester of 2010 amounted to P5.34 billion, 8 percent over the first half of 2009, mainly from ABS-CBN Global and Skycable.

ABS-CBN Global’s revenues rose by 14 percent in US dollar terms but this was slowed down to a 9 percent year-on-year growth in peso terms by the appreciation of the Philippine peso exchange rate.

ABS-CBN Global’s overall viewer count increased by 10 percent year-on-year, driven by continuing strong double-digit subscriber growth in cable TV and IPTV subscriptions.

Skycable’s revenues from cable TV and broadband services grew 13 percent year-on-year in the first semester, driven by a 92 percent increase in broadband service revenues as its broadband subscriber count rose 61 percent versus a year ago.

Willie ready for legal battle vs ABS-CBN

Television personality Willie Revillame is ready to face ABS-CBN in court following his announcement to rescind his contract with the network.

Revillame said he still has a year left in his contract with ABS-CBN. He added, though, that he wants to return to TV on or before December of this year.

"Basta gusto ko bago mag-Pasko kung saan man ay may programa na ako. Kung saan man, gusto ko talaga na ganoon. Kung ano ang mangyari sa akin ay gagawan ko ng paraan ‘yon," Revillame said.

He added: "Hangga’t hindi ako nai-injunction pwede naman daw akong lumabas sabi ng mga abogado ko."

He even joked that he might start a new TV show titled "Willing Willie" or "Wil na Wil."

What’s definite, he said, is that he is not returning to ABS-CBN even amid speculations that he might be given a project alongside action star Robin Padilla. "Hindi na. Hindi na ako makakabalik kasi ito na, nakapag-desisyon na ako."

ABS-CBN executives have refused to release him from his contract that will expire in September 2011.

Bong Osorio, head of ABS-CBN Corporate Communications, said on Monday that as an “aggrieved party,” ABS-CBN is the only one, not Revillame, that can decide whether to end the contract.

Wil Tower

Revillame, meanwhile, assured that he will still proceed with his plan to construct his own studio inside Wil Tower.

The host said the construction of Wil Tower will resume on August 15. Wil Tower is located in front of ABS-CBN’s audience entrance.

"Parang Oprah Studio, mga 1,200 seating capacity. Kung meron akong show, doon na manonood. Magiging para sa lahat kumpleto, may kainan, may mall," Revillame said.

Reports said Wil Tower is the first joint venture project of Revillame and Sen. Manuel Villar.

‘Disappointed’

After the network ended the airing of “Wowowee” on July 31, Revillame was offered a one-hour weekly program on Channel 2 and a possible TV show on Studio 23.

Revillame, however, declined the offers. According to him, he was scheduled to return to “Wowowee” on July 31 as what was agreed upon during his separate meetings with ABS-CBN executives Charo Santos-Concio and Linggit Tan.

He said he was surprised and disappointed after Tan informed him that the company had a change of mind.

He protested the cancellation of “Wowowee” and the network’s plan to give him a pre-recorded TV show.

“After much thought and thorough reflection on where I should stand in the face of these frustrating events, I have come to the conclusion that I should now rescind our contract,” he said in his August 9 letter to ABS-CBN chairman Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III.

“I do this because I honestly believe that the company has not dealt with me fairly. The company acted in bad faith and in clear violation of our contract,” Revillame added.

He also said he sees no reason for the network not to release him from his contract obligations, citing its “allegation that I do not have the public trust or acceptance.”

No intention to hurt them

Revillame maintained that he has no intention to hurt the feelings of Lopez and Concio, but he said he had to make his decision.

"Mabigat kasi ang naging desisyon na ito kasi marami akong inisip na mga taong masasaktan, especially si Ma'am Charo, si Boss Gabby na naramdaman ko naman ang pagmamahal nila sa akin, totoo naman yon,” he said.

He added: "Kaya lang in life, sa buhay ng tao, magde-desisyon ka na masakit pero dapat panindigan mo na ‘yon. At dapat handa ka na sa lahat ng desisyon mo sa buhay."

Revillame said he decided to leave the network to avoid hurting other people. Revillame also believed that his decision to end his contract with ABS-CBN is for the good of everybody, especially those who are against him.

"Kasi marami na akong nakausap na taong masasaktan naman sa akin, tinalikuran ko naman sila. It's not about fame, it's not about popularity, it's not about the money, ‘yong prinsipyo ko na ito. Sa sarili ko. Firm na ako sa desisyon ko," he said.

When asked to comment on reports that ABS-CBN channel head Cory Vidanes had threatened to quit if Revillame would be allowed to go back to “Wowowee,” he replied:

"Sa puso ko, mahal ko silang lahat. In fairness, kay Tita Cory noong time na nagdi-deal ako sa sponsorship pinapakinggan naman niya ako. Pinapayagan naman niya ang mga deal ko. So, wala akong masamang nararamdaman at kinakasama ng loob sa kanila, kay Tita Cory,” Revillame said

ABS-CBN posts record H1 net profit

ABS-CBN Corporation, the country's largest multi-media company reported a record 179% growth in net profit for the first half of the year at P2.265 billion, surpassing its P1.7 billion net earnings for 2009, driven by non-recurring political advertisements, higher airtime and consumer sales.

Its net revenue for the first half stood at P14.41-B, a 38% jump from a year ago.

For the second quarter, the company posted net earnings of P1.1-B from P600-M in 2009, an increase of 22%. Revenue for the period rose to P9 billion from P6.3 billion last year.

Last year, ABS-CBN registered a net income of P1.79 billion, thanks largely to revenue from early advocacy advertisements by politicians positioning themselves for the May polls.

"Our target of a P3-billion net income for the full-year of 2010 is achievable," said Rolando Valdueza, chief finance officer of ABS-CBN.

ABS-CBN Corporation engages in television, radio, cable and satellite programming as well as interactive media, print publishing, content development, and post production services.

Expectations of hitting its full-year growth target sent shares of ABS-CBN soaring by 7.7% to P52.70 in late-trade on Tuesday.

Atom Araullo is RP's cutest newsman: online mag

An online magazine featured 4 males from the ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs team in its 10 cutest newsmen in the Philippines list.

Topping the list of Spot.ph is TV Patrol reporter and Umagang Kay Ganda host Atom Araullo, who was dubbed as the "prettiest newsman on national TV" for his lean frame, mestizo features and boyish charm.

"Atom Araullo has a face that could convince young girls to be more responsible citizens -- as soon as they stop gushing over how cute he is," the website read.

Not only is he cute, he is also athletic and smart, Spot.ph noted. Araullo is an Applied Physics graduate of the University of the Philippines, where he is a well-known activist.

He's also a champion triathlete and trained in soccer, tennis, volleyball, taekwondo, platform diving, mountaineering and underwater diving.

"Indeed, it's a bonus that he's brainy. Because, really, all he has to do to melt our hearts is to go on air. This Atom is certainly the bomb!" Spot.ph said.

Landing on the third spot is Alex Santos, who is a regular on TV Patrol's weekend edition as well as morning show Umagang Kay Ganda. Despite his "salt-and-pepper" hair, Spot.ph said Santos retains his "boy-next-door" appeal.

"Watching him deliver the news on TV Patrol's weekend edition is a pleasant experience -- even if he's dishing out daunting facts...He makes the news more attractive," the website read.

Also on the list are ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) hosts TJ Manotoc and Paolo Abrera, who ranked 7th and 8th, respectively.

Spot.ph said it "can't point a finger" on their appeal, but found both men sexy nonetheless.

Below is the full list of Spot.ph's 10 cutest newsmen in the Philippines:
